Reflective Journal 02

Have been written on the 2nd of March 2009,

Occasionally definition of words in English and understanding the exact meaning of them seems difficult. There are some words, which can be described by one or more sentences in other languages, and vice versa sometimes we have no words in English, which other languages express beautifully in one word. Some words have similar meaning with just a little difference or different collocation. For example, at first the meaning of deductive and inductive was very similar in case of translation to my language. Understanding the difference between deductive argument and inductive argument is very important as we usually use deductive argument in our academic essays.

In case of speaking skills, the strategy of effective disagreement especially in tutorials is important. It should be expressed politely and confidently.  Whenever a point is argued we should acknowledge the point disagreed and then explain it by offering our opinion with reason and support.

One of the useful approaches to understand a lecture is getting the main ideas by using context and prediction. We do not need to catch every single word. Using cues to make good guesses is important. It is a good idea to mark the missing information and ask other students after the lecture.

The computing class seems a piece of cake by having degrees in engineering and doing many jobs by computer. However, some simple definition of words using in computing seemed difficult, for instant, what is a computer? It is an electronic device that gets inputs, does processing, gives outputs and has capacity for storing data. Finding the difference between hardware, software, peripheral and storage is strongly related to their technical descriptions.
